Lygnstøylvatnet, Norangsdalen, Norway

In 1908 a rockslide blocked the river Lygna which in turn filled up the Norangs valley submerging the road and the farm houses. Today this underwater village is often listed as a top divesite in Norway.

Description: Road Fv655 runs parallel along the lake. If you are coming from the south at about 2/3 of the way right before the cattle grid you will find a lay-by with an information board. There is a very short path that takes you to a small beach. This is the entry point. As you walk in you will see a wall underwater. Follow it and you will reach the old road at about 5-6m depth.

  • If you go right (south) you will see the submerged forest and eventually you will reach an old sign (a rock with a rubbed off engravement). Continue along and you will get to the culvert, which is big enough to swim through.

  • If you go left (north) you will see stone walls and fences that delimited properties and eventually to the left in approx. 1.5m the old broken down farm houses. The walls are clearly visible as the remains of the collapsed roofs. If you continue along you will find more houses, a junction in the road and the remains of the rockslide.

Pretty much all throughout the lake you will see the trees.

From the surface, past the cattle grid you will see the houses as they are shallow and close to the shore. Running along the lake, usually the submerged road is also clearly visible.

Logistics

There are no facilities at the dive site.

However, it is a very nice spot for camping, if you would like to stay overnight. Nice places to pitch a tent are either on the lay-by along the south shore of the lake or if you turn right on the foot path right to the north of the lake, past the gate and then right, following the river back towards the lake.
